Richard Stambaugh Obituary

Richard Stambaugh, age 95, of Apex, NC (formerly from Chambersburg, PA), passed away peacefully on Friday August 5, 2022.  Born March 14, 1927, in South Mountain, PA, he was the son of the late Curvin W. and Lottie Shaffer Stambaugh.

Mr. Stambaugh served in the Army as a Technician Fifth Grade from June 29, 1945 to February 15, 1947.  He obtained an Army Sharpshooter status, received the WWII Victory Medal and was given an Honorable Discharge.  His foreign service included Japan and Korea.  Mr. Stambaugh’s career spanned 35 years at the South Mountain Restoration Center before retiring from his role as supervisor of the maintenance department.  Mr. Stambaugh was a member of several organizations throughout his life.  He was a volunteer fireman for the South Mountain fire department.  He was also a member of the Waynesboro Fish and Game Club, the Izaak Walton League, and the Nittany Lion Club.  Mr. Stambaugh enjoyed hunting deer and game birds, fishing, Penn State Football, Penn State basketball, attending baseball games at any level and fall trips to New England with his siblings and their spouses.  He also enjoyed the company of dogs, including his own or those belonging to family and friends.

Surviving is his daughter, Kathy Lee and son in law Roger Lee Jr. of Pittsboro, NC; three siblings, Elizabeth Hartman, Margaret Kauffman, and Curvin Stambaugh; and numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie Stambaugh in 1997, infant daughter, Brenda in 1952, sister Ann Cook, and three brothers, Fred, Paul, and Mervil Stambaugh.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at 11 AM at the Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad St., Waynesboro, PA with Rev. Dr. Curvin Stambaugh presiding. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Strang’s Cemetery in South Mountain, PA.
