Melicent Huneycutt-Vergeer Obituary

Melicent Huneycutt-Vergeer passed away peacefully at her home in Pittsboro on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.  Meli was the eldest daughter of the Rev. William Jerome and Jessie Sims Huneycutt.

She was predeceased by her husband John Vergeer; and is survived by her brother, Jerome Huneycutt of Pittsboro, NC; sisters, Carolyn Basham of Greensboro, NC and Margie Huneycutt of Pittsboro.

Meli’s life was a life of service.  She spent 10 years in South Korea as a Presbyterian mission worker, serving at Kijon Girls School in Chunju and Taejon Presbyterian Christian College.  Afterward, she returned to North Carolina to receive her doctorate at UNC-Chapel Hill.  She taught at various universities including Pfeiffer College and King College before hearing God call her to full time church work.  She was the Director of Spiritual Growth and Nurture at Central Presbyterian Church, in St. Louis, MO.

Meli served on the three person writing team that wrote the Directory for Worship (1980’s version) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  Meli went on to become an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (USA).   Her years as a pastor included serving at First Presbyterian Church in Evanston, IL, Madison Campus Ministry, Madison, WI, and Unity Presbyterian Church, Newton Grove, NC. Meli’s strength was in making the Bible come alive in people’s lives through her Bible teaching.  Through all of her years she was asked to speak at many conferences, retreats, and workshops where she planted seeds of God’s word that sprouted new growth in people’s lives.

Meli lived out her faith through her love for others who are now scattered throughout the world.  She nurtured, encouraged, and loved “her children” wherever she was called.
