Monday, May 21, 2018, at 2:15 in the afternoon, Carolyn Elizabeth Anderson passed into the presence of her Savior from her home at Pittsboro Christian Village, Pittsboro, NC.
Born April 22, 1940 in Chicago to Albert and Hildagarde Anderson, Carolyn spent her childhood and teen years in the Chicago and Oaklawn, IL area. She was a graduate of Oaklawn High School. She earned Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Christian Education Degrees from Calvary Bible College (1962) and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Northern Michigan University (1970). In 1977, she completed her Masters of Arts in Education from Western Carolina University.
Miss Anderson will be remembered by friends and family for her faithful dedication to service as a Christian educator. She taught at Asheville Christian Day School from 1968-1973 and Asheville Christian Academy from 1973-1990 (where she also served as Lower School Principal). She served from 1990-1995 at Annapolis Area Christian School as Lower School Principal, returning to Asheville Christian Academy as Lower School Principal from 1995-2005.
Throughout her 42-year career, she was a master educator, a mentor of younger teachers, and advocate for Christian Schools. An accreditation commissioner with the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), she served on (and chaired) a team that made accreditation visits to Christian schools across the Southeast—evaluating and advising organizations that desired excellence in Christian education. ACSI honored her with a Career Service and Achievement Award for her contributions and service in Christian Schooling.
Upon retirement, she continued in fellowship at Asheville Gospel Chapel, where she served as Sunday school teacher, organist, and encourager to her Christian brothers and sisters. In 2016, she moved to Pittsboro Christian Village, where she continued to serve both formally and as she saw needs. The ladies of the village remember her for the scholarship and devotional focus she brought to her role as leader of the ladies’ Bible study.
She is preceded by her parents, Albert and Hildagarde, and survived by her brother Albert (and his wife Carole) of Durham, NC; her sister Miriam (Anderson) Chenault (and her husband Woodrow) of Monticello, IL, four nieces, a nephew, seven great nieces, three great nephews, literally hundreds of teachers and generations of school children whose lives she touched, and countless brothers and sisters in Christ, who consider her family indeed.
Miss Anderson will be buried in the family plot in Wallace, Michigan, where there will be a graveside service for family only. A memorial service will be held June 15 at 2:00 PM at Pittsboro Christian Village, 1825 East Street, Pittsboro, NC. A second service will be held June 16 at 11:00 AM at Asheville Gospel Chapel, 350 Old Haw Creek Road, Asheville, NC.
