I was with my mom when the message was received of Eric's passing. Our thoughts are with all of you. While it had been many years since I had seen my dear cousin I will always remember words of kindness that he passed on to me during a difficult time. He holds a special place in my heart and will be carried with me for the rest of my life. Love Steph

Our family knew Eric since he was born. All of us thought the world of him and cannot express the feeling of loss that we have over his passing. We were blessed to have been able to share in his life. Jim, Jonathan, and I will always remember his accomplishments: as a cadet at West Point, as a successful businessman, and most importantly as a loving and caring father and son. We know that same smiling, laughing little boy who joined our family for summertime pool parties, wiffle ball on the street, and Harry’s Pizza is now looking down upon all of us and will watch over us with his blessings. Our deepest condolences are sent to Dori, Abby, Allison, Judy, John, Kristin, and Celeste.

Peace be with you Dori, Allison, and Abigail. Eric was an amazing guide and advisor to me during my first year in business, and is one of the reasons it is so successful. I will miss his professionalism, his wicked sense of humor, and his wily smile :-)

Although I only knew Eric as a baby, he has always been family. Distance, time, and raising families of our own kept us from seeing him grow into a man, a soldier, a husband and father, but your video and photos show me how he was everything he could be. I know how much you all must love him and cherish the memories you share here. I mourn with you and share your sorrow. May our God comfort you and may all your memories of Eric be happy ones. He was a wonderful son, husband, and father from all I see. God bless y'all - praying for you!

Wow, this is a shocker... A mutual high school/ neighborhood friend (Kelly Belval) just shared this link with me this past Saturday, and I just got to reading it now. It's been a really long time (mid 1980's) since I've seen or talked with Eric. But what I do remember about Eric is that we had the best times playing wiffleball in the cul-de-sac by his house (Whitinsville, MA) with other mutual friends, who also lived in the neighborhood. He was a very competitive athlete in any sport that he played... Eric was great to have as a teammate and equally as fun to have as an opponent. My condolences to his family members that I knew during those young teenage years that I shared with Eric, and to those who I never met but equally share this loss.

My deepest condolences to Eric's family, as well as those on his SAS team that highly respected his leadership. Eric was such a great work partner with me and I will miss him dearly. What I will miss most is our many chats about exciting golf trips we took or planned to take each year. I remember finding out his Dad took him to The Masters this past spring when Eric was ill and how wonderful that must have been for father and son to share that pleasure. I never got the chance to tee it up with Eric, so hopefully heaven has its own Augusta National and we can play the perfect round together.

I worked with Eric for several years at SAS. As a peer manager, I always admired Eric's candor, his optimism, and the care he showed for those whose careers he was responsible for guiding. Eric was a consummate professional who loved this company and those who worked for him. He always talked about his daughters with such pride.

Eric will be missed.

Eric was a very kind person and hard working and also believed in doing the right thing always. He will be missed. My sincere condolences to the DeJong family.

Though our grateful nation mourns with you in your loss, we can only feel a small part of the loss you are experiencing.

Your loved one will always be a part of our country's story. As such, their sacrifice on behalf of our nation will always be honored.

While the process of grieving requires a lot of time and, somehow, is never complete, we will be praying for you and grieving with you.

In deepest sympathy.

My sincere condolences to all the DeJongs. I spoke with Eric a few months ago and he was very clear about what he intended to do (as he always was.) I wish you peace in this sad time and hope that the good memories will provide comfort in the days ahead. I have many wonderful "DeJong memories," not the least of which was his complaining after spending a weekend with me at Annapolis (complaining b/c we 'squids' had it too easy!).

"They were playing 'Army Blue.' A wave of sadness went through him, memories of parades, the end of dances, Christmas leave. Four years of it, the classes ahead leaving in pride and excitement unknown faces filling in behind. It was finished, but no one turns his back on it completely. The life he might have led came back to him, almost whole." (James Salter, from "Lost Sons")

Go Army, Eric. Beat Navy!

To John, Judy and Eric's entire family: Eric was a very close friend of my son from high school and they have remained friends since. Our family considered him a close friend as well. I admired his intelligence, humor, and complete sense of direction even as a young man. I spent many hours with Eric just talking about life in general and his wisdom was way beyond his years. My sincere sympathy for your loss of such a wonderful person.

I do not know your family but was very sad when I read the obituary of your son and wanted to express that to you. I get notices from the funeral home when someone passes away. Pittsboro is my home town, and this does inform me of friends and neighbors whom have passed... Peace be with you and your family. .
