Eric John DeJong, 47, of Pittsboro, North Carolina passed away on September 29th, 2016 after a hard fought battle with colon cancer.

Eric was born on February 3rd, 1969 in Whitinsville, Massachusetts to John and Judith DeJong. Eric graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts in 1987 and then the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1991. Eric was commissioned into the United States Army Corps of Engineers following his graduation from the USMA, attaining the rank of Captain, and served on Active Duty and the Individual Ready Reserve until his discharge in 2000. A long time employee of SAS Institute in Cary, North Carolina, Eric was a consulting manager. In addition, he opened and built his own small business bookkeeping and tax services company, Carolina Small Business Solutions LLC in Pittsboro. An avid golfer, Eric was an active member of the Chapel Ridge and Preserve Golf clubs. He was also a member of the West Point Society of the Triangle, the USMA Association of Graduates and served for four years on the Board of Directors for the Chapel Ridge Home Owners Association. In addition to golf, Eric enjoyed traveling, grilling and cooking, cruising with his family, eating well and was a passionate New England Patriots fan. 

Eric is survived by his wife Dori DeJong, daughters Allison Leigh DeJong and Abigail Raelene Meeks-DeJong, parents John and Judy DeJong of Whispering Pines, sisters Kristin DeJong of Jensen Beach, Florida and Celeste DeJong-Nugent (Andrew Swindon) of Jensen Beach, Florida; niece Micaela Zidelis of Boston, niece Samantha Nugent and nephews Zachary Zidelis and Chase Nugent of Jensen Beach, Florida; dear long time friends Sean and Jenny O’Brien of Raleigh, and his beloved dachshunds Stretch and Slinky.

A celebration of Eric’s life will be held at 2:00 PM at the Chapel Ridge Golf Club on Wednesday, October 5th, 2016. A private inurnment ceremony will be held at the United States Military Academy at West Point at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Eric’s name can be sent to the Gary Sinise Foundation R.I.S.E. program (https://www.garysinisefoundation.org/programs/rise), providing specially equipped and modified smart homes to severely disabled veterans or to the Scout’s Honor Fund for Colon Cancer Research at the University of North Carolina Cancer Hospital (http://kintera.scoutshonor.org).
