Sylvia LaVerne Elmore, 86, of Carrboro passed away peacefully at home on
Thursday, May 19, 2022.
LaVerne was the only daughter of the late Jesse Carr Riddle and Therssa Dean Riddle
of Carrboro, NC. She graduated from Chapel Hill High School class of 1954.
LaVerne is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Memory Hicks Elmore and they were married in
1957. LaVerne and Hicks spent 20 years traveling for his service in the United States Air
Force and Public Health Service. Following her husband’s retirement, they returned to Carrboro, where she began
working for the Town of Chapel Hill, devoting 30 plus years.
LaVerne was most passionate about the love for her family, bowling, and an avid sports
enthusiast, especially the UNC Tarheels. LaVerne was a dedicated and talented bowler
for more than 50 years, attending more than 30 plus National Tournaments. During her
bowling career, she made many memories and lifelong friends. LaVerne passed her love
of bowling to her grandchildren as well as her loyalty to the Tarheels. She never missed
a game whether in person or at home, an unwavering lifelong fan.
LaVerne is survived by her son, Vernon John Elmore and daughter in law, Kelly Williams
Elmore, caregiver and friend, Wilma Williams of Pittsboro, Her grandchildren who knew
her as “Mema”; Lauren Elmore and partner Dakota Smith of South Carolina, Mollie
Elmore-Terrell and husband Dave Terrell of Mississippi, Dalton Elmore of Chapel Hill,
and great grandchildren Carter, Wyatt, Simon, Daisy, and Emmie Kate.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 24, 2022 from 5pm to 7pm at Donaldson
Funeral Home & Crematory Griffin Chapel. The graveside burial service will be held
Wednesday May 25, 2022 at 11am at Westwood Cemetery in Carrboro, NC, Pastor Bill
Davis presiding, where Laverne will be reunited with the love of her life Hicks.
