Sylvia Butler Obituary

Sylvia Butler, born March 21, 1933, passed peacefully on January 28, 2026, and went home to her permanent address—Heaven—into the loving arms of Jesus. She would have celebrated her 93rd birthday this coming March.

Sylvia was born in Seaforth, North Carolina (now the Jordan Lake area), the daughter of a tobacco farmer, and was raised with the values of hard work, faith, and caring for others. Those values were lived out early in her life, as she became a caregiver when her mother suffered a stroke and was eventually bedridden. During that same season, Sylvia also helped care for and raise her younger brother Bobby, who was just eight years old at the time. Her caregiving continued years later when her father suffered a stroke and lived with her under her care until his passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Chesley Holt and Jesse Belle Seymour Holt; her beloved husband, Billy Butler; her brothers, JC Holt and Bobby Holt; and her sister, Hilda Holt Gardner.

Sylvia was one of six children. She is survived by her brothers, Seymour Holt and Pete Holt, and by her sisters-in-law, Donna Holt (Bobby) and Mary Lou Holt (JC), along with many extended family members and loved ones.

She is survived by her children, Max Butler (Patricia “Patty”) and Belle Brooks (Randy).

Sylvia was the proud grandmother of six grandchildren: Cody Brooks (Tiffany), Chesley Brooks (Alexandra), Leah Brooks Holder (Kyle), Pierce Butler, Holt Butler, and Carly Butler.

She was also blessed with seven great-grandchildren: Adeline Brooks, Bowman Brooks, Hayden Brooks, Thomas Brooks, Henry Brooks, Selah Belle Holder, and Mercy James Holder, along with one stillborn great-granddaughter, Jewel Cates Holder, who now rests in Heaven.

Sylvia devoted many years to serving in the Chatham County School System, first as an elementary school “lunch lady,” and later as a teacher assistant. In both roles, she cherished the opportunity to care for and invest in the lives of countless children, many of whom remembered her kindness long after leaving her classroom.

Sylvia and Billy also shared a deep love for singing and often sang together in church and at various church functions. Their love of music led them to join a singing group, where lasting friendships were formed. One of those friendships revealed a shared love of baking and ultimately led Sylvia and her friend to open The Singing Oven, a bakery on Main Street in Pittsboro. While the bakery lasted only a few years, Sylvia’s love of baking never stopped. She baked hundreds—if not thousands—of cakes and pies over her lifetime, including wedding cakes and special treats for family, friends, and anyone who stopped in to say hello. Through those simple acts, she made people feel welcomed and cared for.

Sylvia never met a stranger. She was bold in her faith and carried a deep burden for anyone she thought might not know Jesus. She was a true prayer warrior. Sylvia and Billy prayed faithfully over their prayer list every day, and anyone who knew her can be assured that if they asked for prayer, their name was added to that list. Whether out running errands or sitting in a waiting room, a simple conversation would often lead her to ask, “Do you know Jesus?” She was so on fire for the Lord that during one of her frequent doctor visits, the office management once had to ask her to stop talking with other patients—a moment that always made us smile.

Everything she did was done with kindness and grace, and it was her hope that everyone would come to know Jesus as their Savior.
