Shirley May (Conklin) Judd

Shirley Judd passed away on Friday, March 24, 2023 at the Coble Creek Twin Lakes facility in Burlington, North Carolina.  She was one hundred years old.   Shirley was born in Buchanan, New York on August 5, 1922 to Howard and Meta (McBain) Conklin.  She attended local schools and graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School in 1938.  After high school she studied music in New York City.  During this time she performed in various venues such as cabarets, plays, etc.

Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, Shirley joined the U.S.O. where she entertained American troops for the duration of the war in places such as Hawaii, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.

Shirley married Lawrence Tiernan in New York City in May, 1945.  They had two children, Cheryl and Jeffrey.

The marriage ended in divorce and on December 5, 1964 Shirley married Donald Judd.  Don worked at IBM and during the next twenty years they lived in Montrose, New York, Burlington, Vermont and Essex, New York.  Following Don's retirement they settled in Fearrington Village located in Pittsboro, North Carolina.  In 2013, they moved to Twin Lakes Community.

Shirley is survived by her daughter Cheryl Murray and step daughters Tama and Shawn Judd.   Her son Jeffrey and her husband Don predeceased her.  Her extended family includes four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

Arrangements are being handled by Donaldson Funeral Home and Crematory in Pittsboro, North Carolina.  A private interment will be held at a later date.
