Ruth Roundy Obituary

Ruth Slaughter Roundy, age 97, formerly of Bear Creek, NC, passed away peacefully early Monday, December 01, 2025, at Spring Arbor Assisted Living Facility in Apex, NC.

Ruth was born May 18, 1928, in the Wake county, NC farming community of Needmore.

A life-long learner, Ruth was first recognized for her academic achievements while a rising high school senior and was selected to attend Tar Heel Girls State. She also loved to dance and often spoke of dancing with her brother Maynard when they were young.

At the end of World War II, she met and married W.T. Roundy, Jr. of New Hill.    As a young wife and mother of three, Ruth helped W. T.  in the family business and volunteered in the community as PTA President and leader of numerous church activities at New Hill Baptist Church.

Once the children were in high school, she went back to college part time.   She worked for the United States Postal Service for many years and was Postmaster at New Hill.

Later in life, Ruth relocated to Bear Creek N.C.  She served on library boards and book clubs; volunteered for Habitat for Humanity; and mentored children in programs designed to expand their horizons. She was a loyal member of the Meroney Methodist Church and greatly valued her community there.

Through the years, she enjoyed traveling to art museums and literary events.  She took extended trips throughout the United States, the Philippines and South Korea, but always enjoyed returning to her home in the woods.

She was devoted to her family, her friends, and her pets.  All received her faithful attention. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruth was the last remaining member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by parents Clifton P. Slaughter and Florine Stephenson Slaughter and her two older brothers, James and Maynard Slaughter, as well as by former husband W.T. Roundy and daughter Cecelia Roundy.

She is survived by two children:  Stephen Troy Roundy (Menam) of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Loretta Roundy Young of New Hill, North Carolina, six grandchildren:  Rifkin Young (Shirley) of Tiburon, California, Joshua Young of Portland, Oregon, Laura Young Lee (Nam) of Tucson, Arizona, Ronica Roundy Minc (Michael) of Peachtree City, Georgia, Sonya Lorraine Roundy of Atlanta, Georgia, and Clifton “Troy” Roundy of Nashville, Tennessee; by six great-grandchildren:  Olivia, Lucas, Calais, Rhett, Annabelle, and Everest. In addition, she leaves behind a large circle of extended family and dear friends.

She will be remembered as a generous spirit who loved to entertain, often hosting “gatherings” for friends and family.   She loved poetry and music and enjoyed spirited conversations.  Vivacious and outgoing to the end, she brought joy to many lives, and she will be missed.

A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held on Saturday, January 10th at New Hill Baptist Church.   Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the devoted caregivers at Spring Arbor   Assisted Living in Apex and to Transitions hospice caregivers, and to those who faithfully visited and made her day brighter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity.

Donaldson Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to serve the Roundy family.
