March 31, 1935 - January 27,2025
Robert "Rob" Koontz, a devoted man of faith, accomplished engineer, and dedicated public servant, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Born March 31, 1935, in Monticello, Indiana, Rob lived a life marked by service to his country, commitment to education, and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.
Rob is survived by his loving wife of over 29 years, Susan Lloyd, their beloved dog Lucy, his two children, Joe Koontz (and wife Sheila) and Mimi Koontz (and son Ian).
A distinguished graduate of West Point Military Academy (1960) and Purdue University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Political Science, Rob dedicated 14 years to serving his country in the United States Marine Corps, both in active duty and reserves. His commitment to public service extended throughout his career, where he made significant contributions at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory working on wind machines and at NASA, where he helped design the International Space Station.
In retirement, Rob continued to serve his community as a substitute math teacher and tutor, sharing his knowledge and passion for mathematics with younger generations. He also contributed to his local community as a member of the Chapel Hill Transportation Board.
Throughout his life, Rob's faith and belief in Jesus Christ served as his foundation and source of strength. This faith guided his actions and relationships, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.
For those wishing to celebrate Rob's life and legacy, the family suggests making a contribution to the Animal Protection Society of Durham or West Point Military Academy, two causes that held special meaning in Rob's life.
