Mildred Hill Doby peacefully entered Heaven on March 21, 2026, at the age of 102, after living a long and beautiful life filled with family, faith, and friendship.
Born and raised in Bahama, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Lillie Hill.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leslie Doby; her son, Ronnie Doby, her daughter, Gayle Amshay; her brothers, Edgar and Billie Hill; and her sisters, Mary Ellen Andrews and Patsy Gray.
Mildred spent most of her life in Durham, North Carolina, where she and her husband lovingly raised their family. At the age of 90, she moved to Pittsboro Christian Village in Pittsboro, North Carolina, where she enjoyed the next twelve wonderful years surrounded by friends and a caring community.
She is survived by her daughter, Jackie Brady (Barry); her son-in-law, Don Amshay; her cherished grandchildren, Whitney Johnson (Matt), Lindsay Miller (Justin), and Lara Amshay; and her treasured great-grandchildren, Carter, Mackenzie, and Charlotte Johnson, and Kylie and Ava Miller.
Mildred was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ whose life reflected kindness, hospitality, and a joyful spirit. Over the years she worshipped at the Gospel Center and later Northgate Chapel in Durham, and most recently Pittsboro Christian Assembly in Pittsboro. At Pittsboro Christian Village, she became known for her warm heart, quick wit, and her willingness to help others. She was always on the go and ready to lend a hand – often serving as a cheerful “Uber” driver for friends who needed a ride.
Mildred lived a full and active life. As a young woman she played high school basketball and was a cheerleader. She later worked for The American Tobacco Company for 42 years. She loved traveling, shopping – especially at the Dollar Store – and going out to eat with friends.
Above all, Mildred treasured her family. She was a proud and loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Pittsboro Christian Village – its administration, kitchen staff, and especially the Care Home staff – for their compassionate care during Mildred’s final months. Special thanks are also extended to Nora with Hospice for her kindness and support.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Mildred’s life at Pittsboro Christian Village on Thursday, March 26th, 2026. There will be a reception from 9:30-10:15, with her Heavenly Homecoming Celebration to follow from 10:30-11:30. The address is 1825 East Street, Pittsboro NC 27312. A private burial will follow in Bahama, North Carolina.
