Virginia Louise Hornsby Hope passed away at the age of 92 on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at The Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro, NC.
“Grandma Hope” was born on March 28, 1928 to the late Edgar Bennett Hornsby and Floyce Elizabeth Rich Hornsby in Odenville, Alabama and spent many happy days growing up in Moody, Alabama with her six sisters and one brother. She was preceded in death by her sisters Sara Lightsey and Ima Jean Newby. Her remaining sisters include Bennie Jo Morris, Essie Mae Jones, Mary Lou Newby, Laney Earley and her “favorite brother” Tommy Hornsby.
Grandma Hope completed school only through the 8th grade, and then began working to help her family. It was at her job in the café where she met her husband, the late James Hubbard “Alabama” Hope. They wed on September 28, 1946 and Grandma Hope was by his side when Hubbard died on July 4, 1991, shortly before their 45th wedding anniversary.
Grandma Hope raised three sons and four daughters. She was preceded in death by her son Bobby Ross Hope and his wife Linda Lockley Hope, of Creswell, NC. Her remaining children include Bud Hope and wife Pat Hope of Birmingham, Alabama; son Jerry Hope and wife Sima Hope of Roper, NC; Bonnie Hope and fiancé Nicholas Apicelli of Seaside, NJ; Cindy Hope Bezzek and husband Mark S. Bezzek, MD, of Pittsboro, NC; Tammie Hope and fiancé John Franklin of Durham, NC; and Karen Crow and husband Bill Crow of Katy, TX.
Loved and adored by them all, Grandma Hope leaves behind twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren. When told during her final days about the very latest new family member expected, she whispered “that is so wonderful!”
Grandma Hope spent her life caring for and being involved with her family and her faith. Her three great loves were her children, her husband, and Jesus Christ. She also loved tablecloths, gardening, bible reading, rearranging her furniture and a good, ripe tomato. Grandma Hope will forever be missed and cherished by her family and all those whose life she touched. Rest easy Grandma Hope, we love you.
