Kurt Muller Obituary

Kurt Erich Muller passed away on Friday, January 14, 2020, in Chapel Hill.

Mr. Muller was born September 26, 1922, in White Plains, New York.  He was married to the former Ruth Rawls on December 29, 1949, in Centenary Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.

Survivors include his wife Ruth; sons, Kurt Muller, Jr. (Hilde) Michael Muller (Becky) of Morehead City, North Carolina, Frederick Muller (Annette) of San Clemente, California, Peter Muller (Carol) of Adelaide, Australia, and he was predeceased by his son Fred Muller who died in June, 2021; his grandchildren, Nick and Sean Muller of Florida, Grant and Samantha Muller of Australia, and Chloe Muller of Taos, New Mexico.  Also surviving are loving cousins, Maggie Sauer, Karen Klein, and Ryann Klein who knew his as Papa Kurt.

He was enrolled at Georgia Tech University in 1942 when World War II began and enlisted in U.S Marines on April 11, 1942, in Charleston, South Carolina.  He served in the Pacific with the Second Marine Division, and was in Kyushu, Japan for Occupation Duty from September 1945 until June 1946.  After his discharge from active duty in September 1946 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and was called into service during the Korean War in 1951.  For his service in WWII, he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.  He retired as a Major from the U.S. Marines Corps Reserves on July 1, 1965.

In 1948 he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.  He was associated with the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for 37 years before retiring in 1985 to Morehead City, North Carolina.  During his career promotions and transfers came frequently with his last position being Managing Director of Firestone Operations in Germany and Switzerland.

He was past President of the North Carolina Master Gardener Association and a longtime supporter of the Rams Club at the University of North Carolina.  He will be remembered for his love of UNC football.

Internment with full military services and honors will take place at the Quantico National Cemetery at a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Quantico Museum at the location of your choice.
