Joseph Fisher Obituary

Joseph R. Fisher of Fearrington Village, Pittsboro, NC, passed away in hospice on December 7, 2025, at age 90. A brilliant engineer, devoted husband and father, and a man of boundless curiosity and creativity, Joe lived a life marked by hard work, creativity, and adventure.

Born on May 31, 1935 in Philadelphia, PA, Joe demonstrated an early aptitude for science and mathematics that would shape his life's work. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1956 and went on to receive a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University in 1957 - an academic foundation that launched a distinguished career in engineering.

Joe began his professional career at Sylvania Corporation, where he quickly advanced to a senior level. His energy and enthusiasm soon prompted him to establish his own company, Signal Processing Systems (SPS), to develop a novel type of computer to analyze signal data using fast Fourier transforms (FFTs). The company thrived for several years doing work for the U.S. military before being bought by Pacer Systems, a military contractor.

Within a few years, however, Pacer decided to shut down the SPS division. Rather than accept this fate, Joe chose to buy back the company from Pacer and reincorporate SPS, this time focusing on developing a highly accurate, real-time line-calling system for tennis. This system, “SharpLine”, was used for several years at prestigious tournaments such as Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. SharpLine’s technology was later incorporated into the “Hawk-Eye” system, which is used today in tennis tournaments around the world for automated line calling and video replay. Joe was awarded 5 patents over the course of his career.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe was an unstoppable force around the house, designing and building many significant home-improvement projects such as a free-form pool for his wife, a former collegiate athlete, that was 52.8 feet on its longest axis, so that 100 lengths would be exactly one mile; a two-story screen porch overlooking the pool, and improving the old tennis court on the property to regulation size; the latter two projects he completed entirely by himself.

He was also active in the Boy Scouts of America, leading Troop 61 in Sudbury, Massachusetts, for more than 10 years. During that time, he led many hiking and canoeing trips throughout New England. His success and dedication were honored with a brick in the “Wall of Fame” at the local Boy Scout Camp.

An avid athlete throughout his life, Joe enjoyed tennis, hiking, and skiing well into his later years. His boundless energy, creativity, and determination continue to inspire all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ellen; son Carl (wife Emmie) of Pittsboro, NC; son Neil (wife Kathleen) of Park City, UT; son Glen (wife Min) of Los Altos Hills, CA; grandchildren Eric Fisher, Theo Fisher, Ethan Fisher, Alex Fisher, and Claire Fisher. He is also survived by a sister, Louise Guerney and a brother Walter Fisher, Jr. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Fisher.

In lieu of flowers, cards, or other gifts, please donate to the American Stroke Foundation or your local Scouting America council.
