James Payne Obituary

James Bartee Payne, 90, originally of Cary, now of Pittsboro, NC died on March 9, 2023 at the Laurels of Chatham.  A Memorial Service will be held on March 25th at 11:00 a.m. at White Plains United Methodist Church, 313 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.  James was born in Madison County, Alabama in 1932 and was the son of the late Richard Bartee Payne and Mary Taylor (Brown) Payne.  He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Helen Townsend Payne in 1976.  He is survived by his wife Pamela Carolyn (Cotton) Payne of Pittsboro, his son James Payne, Jr. of Erwin, NC, and his daughter Carol McNac of New Hill, NC.  Three grandchildren, Jamie McLamb, Haley McNac and Caleb Payne.  Two great-grandchildren, Jody McLamb and Jesse Ray.  James is also survived by his brother, Richard Payne and sister, Emelda Wagoner and many nieces and nephews.  James taught the Closer Walk Sunday School Class at White Plains UMC for close to 20 years and has been a member of the church for over 40 years. James retired after 25 years as a Manufacturing Engineer with IBM in the Space Technology program and then later in retirement he worked an additional 20 years in the pro-shop at Bentwinds Golf Course in Fuquay-Varina.  James was an avid Alabama football fan and golfer and was proud to have served his Country in the Army during the Korean Conflict.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Promedica Hospice at promedica.foundation@promedica.org under their "Grateful Patient and Family Philanthropy Program".  Donaldson Funeral Home is honored to serve the Payne family.  Memorial tributes can be left at this site.
