James Carter Obituary

James Thomas “Tom” Carter, age 85, died at his home Monday, December 2, 2024.  He was born on March 28, 1939, to the late Thomas Carter and Sallie Synder Carter in Rockingham County, North Carolina.  He was one of 10 children.

He is predeceased by his parents, his wife of 62 years, Susie Carter, a son, James T. Carter, Jr, a brother, Doug Carter and a sister, Yvonne Meadow. 

Tom is survived by his son, Jeff Carter, daughter, Sue Powell (Bobby), brother, John Paul Carter, sisters, Doris Jane Patterson (Jay), Hilda Norris, Faye Doss (Paul), Kay Lemons (Billy), Patricia Brady (Darryl), June Puckett (Tim), seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Tom grew up on a farm and enjoyed working outside.  He was an avid bass fisherman and loved hunting.  He worked in construction, including roofing and operating heavy equipment.  Tom was in the Air Force for 4 years.  In his younger years, he was a good athlete.  He played football, softball and golf and he was extremely competitive throughout his life.  He was a UNC fan through and through, but he also loved watching any and all kinds of sports.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 5, from 1:00PM-1:50PM at Antioch Baptist Church 1707 White Cross Road Chapel Hill, NC 27516, funeral service to follow at 2 PM with burial immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital  501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
