Herbert Church, Jr. Obituary

Herbert E. Church, Jr. of Pittsboro, NC passed away on Monday, August 17, 2020 at age 99.  “Ebb” as his friends called him was born in Nashville, TN on December 13, 1920.  His parents were Herbert Church, Sr., and Eunice Hill Church.  Ebb is preceded in death by his wife Dorothea in 2008, who he met and married in Newark, OH in 1943.  They were married 65 years, and had five children, four daughters and one son. He is preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara Church Stocker and Kimberly Sue Church.  He is survived by daughters Lynn C. Ferguson and Carol Krawetz of Pittsboro, NC and son Martin Church, Captain USN (retired) of Honolulu, Hawaii.  Grandchildren Michele Frye of Omaha, NE, Benjamin Church of Pittsburgh, PA and Cathleen Noyes of Suffolk, VA.

Ebb grew up in Swain County, North Carolina and attended college at the Citadel in Charleston, SC before transferring to North Carolina State University to study Electrical Engineering.  Upon graduation in 1941 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree with honors he began his 45 year career with ALCOA Aluminum Company in ALCOA, TN.  Operations transferred him to Newark, OH in 1942, then back to Alcoa, TN in 1945 until 1968 when he was transferred to Pittsburgh, PA as Senior Engineer in the Power Division until retirement in January 1986 as Manager of  the Power Engineering Division.  During his long career with ALCOA he worked in Australia, Brazil and Suriame as a consultant and after retirement with Russia and Siberia to help setup metering electrical systems.

Ebb was long time member of Rotary International and Amateur Radio Operator, call sign W4MEU.  Ebb was a member of ETA Kappa Nu, Order of St. Patrick, and a Registered Professional Electrical Engineer. He enjoyed photography, hunting, fishing, sailing, was an advisor to Boy Scouts of America in Alcoa, TN and Pittsburgh, PA, and enjoyed traveling with his wife and family.

After retirement Ebb and Dorothea moved to Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC.  There will be a family service and internment at Woodlawn Cemetery in Franklin, NC in the future.
