Henry "Billy" Matthews

Henry “Billy” Howard Matthews, age 95, died at The Laurels of Chatham on Wednesday, September17, 2024.  He was born on March 7, 1929, to the late William Henry Matthews and Emma Hayes Matthews in Martinsville, Virginia. 

Billy went into the Army in 1948 and served in Japan during his time during the Korean War.  He was discharged from the Army in 1952 and married Grace Pendergraph and soon started their family.  They had been married for fifty years at the time of her death.  He worked all of his working career as a grocery store operator or owner. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Grace Pendergraph Matthews, brother, Earl Matthews and sister, Josephine Mangum.

Billy is survived by his sons, Tony Matthews of Durham, Nc , Ken Matthews of Chapel Hill, NC, Kevin Matthews (Tammy) of Siler City, NC, four grandchildren, Tyler Matthews, Jesse Matthews, Leah Matthews, Kristan Coly, three great grandchildren, Jesse Allen Matthews, Grace Ann Matthews, and Maddie Grace Coly, brothers Phillip Matthews and Robert “Bobby” Matthew both of Aiken, SC and a sister, Ruth Bowen of Myrtle Beach, SC.
