Harvey Asher Himberg of Fearrington Village, N.C. died on December 14, 2020 after a three-year battle with Amyloidosis. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of over 30 years, Jamie Burnett, two daughters (with his first wife Ann Kip, d. 2008), Julia Himberg of Tempe, Arizona, and Amy Himberg of Washington D.C., and a brother Philip Himberg of Beacon, New York.
Harvey was born in New York City on March 30, 1947. He received his BA from Oberlin College in 1968. Harvey then spent two years in the U.S. Peace Corps, teaching English in Tunisia. He subsequently received a Ph.D. in Political Science from CUNY.
He worked at the U.S. House of Representatives for Rep. Cardiss Collins (D, IL) before beginning a long tenure at the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). In that position and subsequent ones at numerous international financial institutions, Harvey was a pioneer in environmental policy. Throughout his career, he taught at institutions such as the University of California, Santa Barbara and at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
In 2014, Harvey and Jamie moved to the community of Fearrington Village near Chapel Hill, North Carolina. There, he served as a vice-chair of the Chatham County Democratic Party, where his knowledge, common sense, and humor were greatly appreciated. He was also a valued board member-at-large of the Fearrington Democratic Club.
Harvey is remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues for his vibrant personality, exceptional optimism, and great sense of humor.
