Elizabeth "Lib" McCoy Mason

Elizabeth “Lib” Christine McCoy Mason, age 94, died peacefully at UNC Hospitals Saturday, July 30, 2022. 

She was born on June 5, 1928, to the late Garland Prescott McCoy and Pattie Belle Stone McCoy. She graduated from Bells High School in 1945 and she graduated from Croft Business School.  Lib worked at the University Laundry, Duke University and at the ASC office in Chatham County.  Lib married Brodie Lee Mason, Jr after he returned from service in the Korean War on September 13, 1952.  After her children were born, she quit work to become a stay-at-home mother and housewife.

A faithful member of Bells Baptist Church for 90 years until she moved to Twin Rivers when she then attended Pittsboro Baptist Church until the pandemic started. Lib was outspoken, independent, opinionated, friend to so many and she loved with her whole self, unconditionally just like she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  She touched so many people; she made them feel like family. 

Lib was a wonderful example of a Christian wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, and friend. She was so loved and will be missed dearly. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost sixty years, BL Mason, JR, her son, Ronnie Lee Mason, and her brother Billy Sanford McCoy.  She is survived by her daughter, Patt Sturdivant (Terry), grandchildren, Ashley Whitaker (Kain), Blaine Sturdivant (Elizabeth), Leslie Branch (Bennett), Brittany Phillips (Tanner), Taylor Mason and Parker Mason and daughter in law, Jessica Mason, great grandchildren, Ellie and Paisley Whitaker, Colby and Natalie Sturdivant and Rhett Phillips and God daughter, Janet Fearrington and several special friends and family.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, August 2, 2022, from 10:00AM to 10:50AM at Bells Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 11:00AM with Pastor Wesley Thomas and Rev. Bob Wachs presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
