Elizabeth "Beth" Merritt Obituary

Elizabeth “Beth” Young Merritt passed away peacefully and surrounded by her loving family on January 24, 2024, in Chapel Hill at the age of 62, after a bravely fought battle with Endometrial cancer.

There was nothing that Beth loved more than her family. She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Lee Merritt; children, Nancy Halley (spouse Ivan Halley) and James Merritt (spouse Hannah Merritt); and mother-in-law, Joree Merritt. She was predeceased by her mother, June Feeley Young; father, Richard Robertson Young; and brother, Rick Young (spouse Cheryl Young).

A lifelong resident of Chapel Hill, Beth attended Chapel Hill High School and UNC Greensboro. She married the love of her life, Lee Merritt, in October 1985. In their lifetime together, she was blessed with two loving children, Nancy and James, as well as a devoted son-in-law, Ivan, and daughter-in-law, Hannah. She was looking forward to becoming a grandmother and meeting her first grandson this summer. In her career, she was a strong leader, steady mentor, and encouraging friend, and was happy to share all that she knew to help others succeed. She retired with 34 years of service to Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina in 2021.

Beth will be remembered as an extraordinary wife, mother, and friend. She found peace in quiet moments with a book or working in the garden, but was happiest on the Carolina coast, surrounded by family, friends, and ocean air. She was vibrant, loving, and selfless, and found tremendous joy in the world around her. She loved the blooming azaleas in the spring, dancing to Carolina Beach Music in the summer, cheering for Carolina football in the fall, and bringing all of her people together, always. In her lifetime, she built a village of lifelong friends who became family, all of whom will remember her generosity, warm smile, contagious laughter, and resilient spirit. In recent years, her family is proud to share that she demonstrated unparalleled positivity and bravery in the face of adversity and continued to shower those around her with love.

All are invited to attend a Memorial on February 24, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Guests are encouraged to wear bright colors to this celebration of life.

In lieu of flowers, her family asks for donations to the Foundation for Women’s Cancer in her honor. Donations can be made online at Donate - Foundation For Women's Cancer (foundationforwomenscancer.org)
