Elizabeth Louise Cobb passed away peacefully on December 29, 2022. Born on September 6, 1926 in Lutherville, MD to parents Daniel and Louise Brooks; Elizabeth was affectionately known as “Betty Lou” to her friends and “BB” to her family.
As a young girl, she attended Notre Dame Preparatory School for Girls in Baltimore where she was an avid horseback rider, tennis player, and golfer. After high school Betty Lou spent two years at Penn Hall Junior College and Preparatory School in Chambersburg, PA before going on to graduate from Madison State Teachers College (now James Madison University) with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1948. She returned to Baltimore after college where she began teaching first grade.
She met her husband Lynn Merle ”Ty” Cobb in 1949 at Hillandale Golf Club. They married in 1950 and relocated to the Philadelphia area where Ty was offered an engineering position at Johnsville Naval Air Station. The couple eventually settled in Willow Grove, PA and had two children, Christopher William Cobb and Anna Lees Cobb.
Always outgoing and conversational, Betty Lou loved playing bridge, bowling, and golfing with her friends and family. She was active in Abingdon Presbyterian Church, Women’s Club, Old York Road Country Club, various community youth organizations, and delivered food to the elderly for Meals on Wheels.
After her husband passed away in 1994, she moved to Pittsboro NC in 1998 with her daughter Anna Lees. There she sang in the Fearrington Village Voices, was a member of University Presbyterian Church and continued her lifelong love of the game of golf. She played regularly until the age of 85. Always a speedy player, Betty Lou hit the ball straight down the fairway rarely playing from the rough.
Her favorite words of advice were to maintain a positive attitude, speak your mind, count your blessings, and do the best with what God has given you. Another favorite was “if you don’t have something good to say about someone, don’t say anything at all”.
Survived by her loving children Anna Lees Cobb and Christopher William Cobb; and daughter-in-law Marjorie Solic Cobb; her four grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher Douglas Cobb and his wife Sarah Asciutto Cobb, Stephen Majer Cobb, Elizabeth Brooks Laundon and her husband Robert Kregg Laundon, and Kevin Solic Cobb and his wife Jenna Martin Cobb.
