Deryl Merritt Obituary

Deryl Franklin Merritt, 84, of Chapel Hill entered the Kingdom of Heaven on February 13, 2024 suddenly while doing what he loved, working on a project in his workshop.

Deryl was a graduate of Chapel Hill High and attended the Technical Institute of Alamance, which later became Alamance Community College, where he received his certification as a Technical Draftsman.

While in High School Deryl worked at Belk's Department Store at its original location on Franklin Street. He later worked as a Draftsman at Research Triangle Institute. He worked on many design projects all over North Carolina, as well as many private ventures for homeowners across the Triangle region. In the late 70's he along with longtime friend and business partner, Mike Riggsbee, purchased Andrews & Riggsbee Hardware of Carrboro. They moved the store from its original location to a new building they built at 203 South Greensboro Street, where it operated successfully for many years. After selling the Hardware they built, opened, and operated M&R Shop-Quick Convenience Store and Self-Storage. Recently, Deryl and Mike retired after a successful partnership that spanned decades.

Deryl proudly served as a member of the North Carolina National Guard and loved his Country. He was very athletic and extremely competitive in all sports, especially softball and Golf. He, along Riggsbee, helped raise money for aluminum bleachers and the maintenance of the Carrboro Softball Field, now the location of the Carrboro Farmers Market. Together, they coached little league sports, giving back to the youth of the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area. An excellent golfer, he regularly played in the Falconer Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Chapel Hill Country Club. He had fond memories of getting to meet and play a round of golf with Michael Jordan.

Deryl and his wife of 60 years, Joanne, loved spending time at their home away from home in Myrtle Beach. They enjoyed hitting the road together and finding unique out of the way places to eat and shop. They enjoyed visiting with friends but most of all they enjoyed their time with one another, she watching her "Westerns", and he "Piddling" in one of his many workshops.

Deryl was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church and had many wonderful memories from his youth with childhood friend Jim Hardee. He and Joanne were the first couple to be married in the new sanctuary once it was completed.

Deryl was preceded in death by his sister, Jewel M. Blackwood, mother, Lonie P. Merritt, father, Jesse W. Merritt, brother, Watts Merritt, and nephew, Glenn Merritt.

He was immediately followed in death, on the same evening, by his grand-niece Jenny Merritt, daughter of Ricky and Lynn.

Deryl is survived by his wife, Joanne S. Merritt, nephews; Geary Blackwood (Lisa), Charles Blackwood (Lisa), Ricky Merritt (Lynn), niece Norma M. Davis (Carlton), grand-niece Jordan Frye (Corey), grand-nephew Casey Blackwood (Flora), grand-niece Jesse Blackwood (Drew), grand-nephew Ricky Norwood Jr, grand-niece Jessica Allison (Chris), great-grand-nephews; Hunter Merritt Frye and Bryson Ellis Frye; as well as a host of cousins and family whom he loved dearly.
