Bonnie Elizabeth (Bird) Sullivan

Bonnie Elizabeth Bird Sullivan, 78, died July 4, 2026, at home in Fearrington Village. She loved a few things with intense fervor: Firstly, John Brian Sullivan, her husband of 58 years, and their sons Brian Patrick Sullivan (Beth Dallam) and Kevin Lux-Sullivan (Rev. Holly Lux-Sullivan).

After her family came art: looking at it, discussing it, teaching others to love it, and guiding museumgoers through the High in Atlanta as a docent. Introducing others to art by moderating classes at Shared Learning of Chapel Hill gave her particular joy. Endlessly curious, Bonnie went down research rabbit holes long before they could easily be done online, and she loved to ignite curiosity in others.

As much as she loved sharing her knowledge, she also loved to hear about Brian and Beth’s foster kitten rearing and Kevin’s improv performances. 

A passionate love of art was apparent in Bonnie’s early work as a graphic designer, which she used later in life while volunteering with UNC Hospice and Shared Learning. For much of her professional life, Bonnie was a devoted therapist who dedicated her work to helping those in emotional pain. 

She embraced the unconventional and loved to create something out of nothing, from her boys’ childhood Halloween costumes to beaded earrings she and Beth made and sold at craft fairs. She sewed everything that didn’t move, including ministerial stoles for Holly that always get compliments. 

Bonnie and John were two sides of a coin: John calm and steady, Bonnie vibrant and extroverted. She and Kevin delighted everyone at his wedding by doing the hand jive from “Grease” on the dance floor. Endlessly imaginative, Bonnie celebrated life. Joy and laughter were near-constant companions despite years of chronic pain.

She was enchanted by our world: Bonnie’s temple was the trees, birds, water, and sky. In her final weeks, watching the clouds brought her endless fascination and entertainment.

Bonnie is also survived by brother Samuel W. Bird Jr. (Cindy) and sister-in-law Hanora Bird. She was predeceased by brother Jerome and their parents, Marion Williams Bird and Samuel Warren Bird Sr.
