Betty Westfall Obituary

Betty June Swan Westfall, 97, of Galloway Ridge Pittsboro N.C, passed away on April 7, 2026.

She was born on July 10, 1928, in Polson, Montana, daughter of the late Rebecca and James Swan. She is preceded in death by all siblings, Mary Virginia Swan George, Robert I. Swan, George G. Swan, James Monroe Swan, and John Leslie Swan.

She attended Bowling Green Business College and Fairmont State College, gaining employment as a legal secretary for 8 years before turning her focus to family.

On July 10, 1953, Betty married Arlie Harold Westfall, who preceded her in death on May 22, 1987, in Richmond Virginia. Arlie, being a Captain in the Army, afforded them to live in multiple locations including Alaska, Colorado, and Texas before moving to Lumberton, NC where he settled by opening his practice as an OBGYN and she was involved in raising the family. Together they shared the love of travel, visiting all continents, obtaining private pilot licenses, and hunting. Betty was very active at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Lumberton N.C as well as the Town and Country Garden Club, The Lumberton Book Club, the Repeat Performance Thrift Shop, and volunteering at elementary schools in the community.

After moving to Galloway Ridge Retirement Community in 2009 she continued volunteerism at their onsite library, the welcoming committee and church activities. She continued her love of gardening and birds by maintaining a tailored garden patio, finding happiness in others enjoyment of it.

She is survived by her 2 daughters and their spouses, Linda and Edward Stanton of Sanford, N.C and Carolyn and Frank Beatty of Chapel Hill N.C. Betty, known as Nana to her 5 grandchildren, is survived by Jeffrey Stanton of Washington, D.C, Scott Stanton of Corvallis, Oregon, Collin Beatty and his wife Brandi of Lafayette, IN and Marisa Beatty of Chapel Hill, N.C. Her grandson, Craig Stanton preceded her in death in April 2022. She also has two great granddaughters, Berkley, four and Wrenley, two, of Lafayette, IN.

Our thanks go to the wonderful staff at all levels of Galloway, from maintenance, restaurant servers, front desk, environmental, the caring Arbor staff and particularly the dedicated home health aids who assisted her for years. All treated her with respect and compassion.

A family service will be held at a later date, with her internment at the Trinity Episcopal Church Columbarium in Lumberton, N.C.
