HS Stevens Williams, Jr.

H.S. Williams, Jr., 78, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Chatham County on October 25, 1939 to Herman and Ola Williams. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Ellen W. Crabtree (James) of Chapel Hill and his brother Philip Ray Williams (Lib) of Yadkinville, NC.

HS is survived by his wife of 55 years Peggy Harbison Williams, a daughter Marty W. Mitchell and Tommy Mitchell of NYC., a son Steven Williams of Apex and his fiancé Anne Chen of Denmark. One grandson Kyle Mitchell of Pittsboro, NC and one great grandson Sterling Wolf Mitchell. HS was loved and respected by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He worked for 18 years for the Chapel Hill phone company working his way up to Field Engineer. Southern Bell Telephone bought the Chapel Hill Telephone Company and HS worked for Bell for 18 years, retiring as a Building Industry Consulting Engineer. His job included a large section of Central North Carolina with his primary customer being the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill because of his vast knowledge of the company telephone system in Chapel Hill and on the campus of UNC.

He was awarded the “Count on Me” award by Southern Bell for his exemplary services to UNC.

HS was a very proud volunteer for the American Red Cross Disaster Raleigh operation for almost 10 years, going to 33 National disasters including hurricanes, floods, ice storms, and New York City after 9-11. Serving thousands of meals and soothing countless hearts in pain.

HS and Peggy retired in 1994 and immediately began traveling with their RV over the United States, visiting 42 of the 50 states.

In 1995, they built a small log cabin on 10 acres in Ennice, NC in Alleghany County.

He especially loved the desert S.W. Arizona, New Mexico, Southern California, West Texas and spent many winters exploring those areas.

He was a proud veteran of the North Carolina National Guard, serving 8 years. He was also a volunteer for the National Park Service on the Blue Ridge Parkway. He was awarded the Volunteer of the year in his district in 1995 and worked over 3 years.

HS was a quiet gentle man with a ready smile and helping hand. He preferred working in the background…he loved being from the country and living there all of his life. He loved the East Coast Mountains and they soothed his soul once many miles.

A Memorial Service to honor his life will be held on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church, 269 Manns Chapel Road Pittsboro, NC. The family will receive friends following the service in the Church Community building.

Flowers are acceptable or donations can be made in his memory to Transitions Lifecare Hospice 250 Hospice Circle Raleigh, NC 27607.
