Annie Berta Brooks Matthews, the oldest child of the late Manly and Nellie Snipes Brooks, was born on November 9, 1916 in Chatham County, NC. She departed her earthly life on December 3, 2017 at the age of 101.
At an early age, she joined Mitchell Chapel Church and attended school in Chatham County. Annie migrated to Los Angeles, California in 1952. She was employed at May Company department store in Los Angeles and retired in 1978. Annie joined Oziel Chapter 8 of the Eastern Star and St. Andrews Missionary Baptist Church where she served faithfully on the Usher Board and in the Progressive League Auxiliary. In 1988, Annie returned home to Pittsboro, NC to assist ailing mother, Mrs. Nellie Brooks. She also rejoined Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church and became a member of the Missionary Society.
Annie Brooks Matthews also called "Auntie" by all of her nieces and nephews, was a kindhearted, generous and spiritual person who loved her family. She always greeted you with a smile.
Annie was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Matthews and her siblings, James Brooks, Mary Rodgers, Eddie Jack Brooks and Mozelle Green. She leaves to cherish her memory: her brothers, Lenon Manly Brooks,(Alean) 0f Pittsboro, NC, Shelton Brooks of Washington, DC; and one sister, Shirley Frierson of Brooklyn, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other family members.
